Invading Sea editor among Sierra Club Florida’s award recipients 

Nathan Crabbe received the Indigo Award, given to an individual who provides balanced reports of Florida’s environmental issues

The Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Chapter Awards, which include the St. Johns Riverkeeper, the city of Cape Canaveral’s chief resilience manager and several leaders in Sierra Club groups throughout the state.

The recipients include Nathan Crabbe, editor of The Invading Sea website. Crabbe received the Indigo Award, which goes to an individual who provides balanced reports of environmental issues in Florida.

The Invading Sea is a nonpartisan source of news, commentary and educational content about climate change and other environmental issues affecting Florida. The website shares opinion pieces on these issues with 27 newspapers across Florida. 

Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Environmental Studies took over management of The Invading Sea last March, hiring Crabbe as its editor. He was previously opinion editor for the Gainesville Sun newspaper.

His local chapter, the Suwannee St. Johns Group, will be presenting the award at an event this March. Other chapters will be also presenting awards to recipients in their areas. 

The recipients (with their area group in parentheses) and the awards that they received are: Leah Weisburd (Broward) — Pine Tree Award, Max Goldstein (Broward) — Otter Award, Phil Busey (Broward) — Manatee Award, Glenn Laufer (Loxahatchee) — Pine Tree Award, Zachary Eichholz (Turtle Coast) — Osprey Award, Barbara Gubbin (Northeast) — Manatee Award, Lucille Pendleton (Northeast) — Sand Dollar Award, Matanzas Riverkeepers (Northeast) Jen Lomberk and Capt. J. Silas Tanner — Cypress Award, Lisa Williams (Northeast) — Panther Award and Lisa Rinaman (Northeast) — Cypress Award.
