“The Invading Sea” media collaborative has won a national opinion writing award for editorials on the threat of sea-level rise in South Florida, the News Leaders Association announced Tuesday.

The Sun Sentinel shared the Burl Osborne Award for Editorial Leadership for its work on The Invading Sea, published in collaboration with the Miami Herald, Palm Beach Post and WLRN Public Radio. The award recognizes editorial writing that makes a difference in a community.

Here is what the judges said about the project.

The partnership “marshalled resources to educate and urge readers to take action on a critical regional issue. In crisp and compelling language, these editorials articulated complicated issues and how they would affect residents, conveying a sense of responsible urgency without undue sensationalism or panic. These were well-reported and a public service.”

The News Leaders Association Awards drew 526 entries from across the United States and named winners and finalists in 11 categories.

The News Leaders Association is a nonprofit professional organization that resulted from the merger of the American Society of News Editors and the Associated Press Media Editors.

“The Invading Sea” is a collaboration of four South Florida media organizations — the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Miami Herald, Palm Beach Post and WLRN Public Media.
