Sargassum is a seaweed that drifts across the ocean in floating patches and washes up on beaches.
Sargassum provides environmental benefits under normal conditions, but warming oceans and pollution are causing it to grow out of control. When it piles up and rots on beaches, it can block sea turtle hatchlings from getting to the ocean and release gases that irritate people’s lungs.
